Is it legal to keep Sungazers as pets?

Sungazers are listed nationally on the Threatened or Protected Species list. This means that anyone wanting to handle or do anything that will directly affect Sungazers requires a permit. They are also listed on CITES Appendix II. International trade in specimens of Appendix-II species require an export permit.
Sungazers do NOT breed in captivity and hence the keeping of this species as pets does have a detrimental impact on the wild population and is NOT encouraged. Having said this, the existing captive populations are valuable for the long term conservation of the species.
